Servings: 2

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 25 minutes

Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 Pieces Mackerel (Saba) fillets
  • 0.5 Piece Lemon
  • 4 tbsp Soy sauce
  • 4 tbsp Mirin
  • 2 tsp Japanese mustard (Karashi)
  • 1 tsp Chilli pepper
  • 2 Stalks Green onions

Instructions:

  1. First, grate the peel off half of the lemon, and then squeeze out its juice. Chop the green onions finely, and set all these aside.
  2. Clean the mackerel fillets properly, and lightly pat them dry.
  3. In a non-stick skillet, over medium heat, add the mackerel fillets skin-side down. Cook the fillets for about 3 minutes on each side, until they become golden brown.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix together soy sauce, mirin, grated lemon peel, lemon juice, Japanese mustard, and chilli pepper.
  5. Pour this mixture over the mackerel fillets in the skillet. Let it simmer over low heat for 10 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
  6. Garnish with chopped green onions, and serve the Spicy Japanese Breakfast Saba with steamed rice on the side.
