Total Time: 40 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 Pieces Mackerel (Saba) fillets
- 0.5 Piece Lemon
- 4 tbsp Soy sauce
- 4 tbsp Mirin
- 2 tsp Japanese mustard (Karashi)
- 1 tsp Chilli pepper
- 2 Stalks Green onions
Instructions:
- First, grate the peel off half of the lemon, and then squeeze out its juice. Chop the green onions finely, and set all these aside.
- Clean the mackerel fillets properly, and lightly pat them dry.
- In a non-stick skillet, over medium heat, add the mackerel fillets skin-side down. Cook the fillets for about 3 minutes on each side, until they become golden brown.
- In a separate bowl, mix together soy sauce, mirin, grated lemon peel, lemon juice, Japanese mustard, and chilli pepper.
- Pour this mixture over the mackerel fillets in the skillet. Let it simmer over low heat for 10 minutes, until the sauce thickens.
- Garnish with chopped green onions, and serve the Spicy Japanese Breakfast Saba with steamed rice on the side.
