Spicy Japanese Beef Bowl (Gyudon)

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams Thinly sliced beef
  • 2 medium size Onions
  • 3 tablespoons Cooking sake
  • 3 tablespoons Mirin (sweet cooking rice wine)
  • 3 tablespoons Soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons Sugar
  • 2 cups Japanese short grain rice
  • 1 tablespoon Red chili flakes
  • 2 Green onions
  • optional Pickled ginger (for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Cook the rice as per the instructions on the package.
  2. While the rice is cooking, peel the onions and slice thinly.
  3. In a large frying pan, add the onions, sliced beef, and the chili flakes.
  4. Sauce mixture: In a small bowl, combine the sake, mirin, soy sauce, and sugar. Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved. Pour this sauce into the frying pan.
  5. Cook over medium heat until the onions are soft and the beef is cooked. This should take around 10-15 minutes.
  6. To serve, place a portion of rice in a bowl. Top with the cooked beef and onions, and garnish with green onions. Serve with pickled ginger on the side.
