Classic American Apple Pie

Cook Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Ingredients:
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup unsalted butter, cut into pieces
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 6 apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoon water
- 2 tablespoon brown sugar
Instructions:
- 1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- 2. In a large bowl, combine the flour, butter, half of the granulated sugar, and salt. Work the butter into the flour using your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse bread crumbs. Add water gradually and mix until a dough forms. Divide the dough in half and wrap in plastic wrap. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
- 3. In a separate bowl, combine apples, lemon juice, remaining sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss until everything is evenly combined.
- 4. Roll out one half of the dough and place it in a pie dish. Trim any overhang, and then spread your apple mixture evenly into the crust.
- 5. Roll out the second piece of dough and place it over top of the apples. Seal the edges and make slits in the top for steam to escape. Beat an egg with 2 tablespoons of water and brush it over the top of the pie, then sprinkle with brown sugar.
- 6. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the pie is golden and the apples are tender. If the edges of the pie start to brown too much, you can cover them with foil for the last 15 minutes of baking.
- 7. Let the pie cool on a wire rack for at least an hour before serving. Serve warm, ideally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
